Practical & Realistic Self-Care Ideas

Self-care plays a big role in our mental wellness. We don’t always give it the priority we should for various reasons, but we want to encourage you to take the time to care for yourself at least once per week. We all deserve it!

Here is a list of ways you can practice self-care in case you need inspiration. We broke them up into different categories to make them easier to browse through, or in case you’re interested in a certain category of self-care. If you have any self-care ideas, please feel free to share them in the comments and we’ll add them to our list to share with others!
 
 

Hygiene

  • Take a relaxing bath. Don’t forget a bath bomb, bubbles or a candle!
  • Take a longer-than-normal shower
  • Brush your teeth
  • Floss your teeth
  • Whiten your teeth with whitening strips
  • Brush your hair
  • Style your hair
  • Shape your eyebrows
  • Shave or wax your legs (or other areas)
  • Give yourself a manicure and pedicure
  • Wash your face
  • Exfoliate your face
  • Prone to blackheads? Use a pore strip to get the gunk out of your skin!

 

Pamper

  • Use lotion or body butter to moisturize your face, arms, and legs
  • Try a new brand or scent of lotion
  • Try a new brand or scent of hand or bath soap
  • Try a new brand or type of deodorant
  • Try a new brand or scent of shampoo or conditioner
  • Replace your bath rag, sponge, or loofah
  • Get your haircut
  • Get lowlights or highlights in your hair
  • Change your hair color
  • Get a professional manicure or pedicure
  • Get a massage
  • Get a facial
  • Get your eyebrows professionally waxed
  • Get your legs (or other areas) professionally waxed
  • Visit a department store and get your makeup done at the counter of a makeup brand
  • Spend some time in a Jacuzzi

 

Meals and diet

  • Give yourself a break from cooking and order take-out
  • Eat a nice, healthy meal
  • Pick a day and drink nothing but water
  • Treat yourself to your favorite snack or meal
  • Have a slice of your favorite pie or cake

Chores

  • Dust your home
  • Vacuum your home
  • Sweep and clean your non-carpeted floors

  • Empty the lint compartment in your dryer
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs in your home
  • Make your bed
  • Clean out your closet and donate the clothes and shoes you haven’t worn in the last 12 months
  • Empty all trashcans in your home and put it in your trashcan outside

  • Declutter the mail laying around the house
  • Throw out all socks, underwear, and undershirts with holes

Social and Family

  • Join an online support forum

  • Sit down with your significant other and talk about how each other’s day went without any electronics on

Good for the heart and soul

  • Say “no thank you” to something you want to say no to, without feeling guilty.
  • Go on a drive by yourself and listen to your favorite songs
  • Go on a mini road trip
  • Let yourself sleep in one morning
  • Take a nap
  • Go to bed early one night
  • Turn off all electronics, light some candles, and reflect on your day
  • Sit in a quiet space, close your eyes and take some deep breaths
  • Unplug — avoid social media for one full hour (or longer)
  • Look at yourself in a mirror and say something that you like or something positive about yourself
  • Look at yourself in a mirror and smile at yourself for at least ten seconds
  • Write a list of things that you like about yourself
  • Write a list of your strengths
  • Volunteer for a charity
  • Do something nice for someone
  • Say something nice to someone
  • Hand-write nice a letter to someone, and mail it
  • Write a nice message on a sticky note and leave it somewhere random

 

You’re allowed to spend a little money on yourself, too

  • Buy yourself some flowers
  • Buy yourself a new shirt, pair of pants, or shoes
  • Buy yourself some new craft supplies
  • Buy yourself some new perfume or cologne
  • Buy yourself some new cosmetics
  • Buy yourself a new accessory (sunglasses, wallet, purse)
  • Buy yourself a new video game
  • Buy yourself a new book
  • Buy yourself a new magazine
  • Buy something that you’ve had your eyes on lately (assuming it’s in your budget!)
  • Buy a Himalayan salt lamp and place it in a room you most frequent
  • Buy something new for your home. Home decor, towels, air purifier, etc…
